I’m really excited to write this post and share with you about 5 reasons why you need to visit The Blackburn Inn for a weekend getaway!

Every year for our anniversary, James and I get one of the grandparents to watch the kids for a weekend so we can enjoy a getaway, just the two of us, and re-connect – or disconnect. And last year, when we celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary, was no different. We like to travel a fair distance from home to escape the busyness of the area and when I heard about The Blackburn Inn, I was immediately excited to share the location with my husband!
We booked our weekend stay and planned a road trip to Staunton, VA (about 2.5 hours from Loudoun County, VA). We’re an exploration loving couple so the idea of checking out a small town and finding some hidden gems sounded great to us but we weren’t exactly sure what to expect from our stay at the Inn. From my quick research, I had discovered that the Inn had an interesting past life as an asylum and an ex-prison. As daunting as that sounds in words, this place won us over with its beauty as soon as we approached the charming entrance and drove up the circle drive.

We were asked by many if our stay was uncomfortable given the Inn’s history. Our response – absolutely not. If it weren’t for the yet to be renovated buildings or previous knowledge, you wouldn’t even know!
- The Atmosphere
We were both immediately delighted with the calming and relaxing atmosphere of the Inn the moment we drove by the welcoming sign and passed a creek lined with willow trees.
If the luscious landscape and view of the beautifully restored building wasn’t enticing enough to draw you in, the amazing fountain at the center of the drive definitely gives you the feeling that you’re in for a luxury stay. - The Accommodations
From the cozy rooms to the deluxe suites, there are several options to choose from when booking your stay at The Blackburn Inn. We stayed in a Queen Suite and our room was delightfully outfitted with a cute sitting area and a separate room with a queen bed.
The decor was both timeless and modern with a great mix of style. The rainfall shower in the bathroom was luxurious and you can even book a room with a deluxe soaking tub – maybe next time!

- The Food
I was pleasantly surprised that they offered a complementary breakfast which included baked goods from local artisans. The on-site dining is located on the first floor in a quaint bistro which boasts delicious and locally sourced seasonal meals. And the sweet lavender cookies left in the room as a welcoming perk were a great treat to bring along with us on our explorations. - The Grounds
Knowing the history of the Inn, we were excited to walk around the grounds and explore. We were sure to ask what our limits were and the staff that checked us in very graciously told us all about the buildings and where we could and could not go.

- The Local Area
If you decide the leave the Inn for any reason, there are many local places to check out around the area. We enjoyed walking around and checking out the boutique shops and bakeries that dotted the historical downtown area.
Hiking along the Appalachian Trail didn’t disappoint and we even stopped to take a picture of the two of us at a picturesque overlook before we set out to a few antique shops.

I wish I could say we explored it all but the Inn is ever expanding and they are renovating more of the grounds and buildings on the property. Fortunately, that means we can go back again for another weekend getaway, maybe next time we’ll go in the winter.
All in all, I highly recommend checking in for a couple’s retreat at The Blackburn Inn. It’s romantic, historical and yet modern and a great escape from the every day normalcies.
I hope you get a chance to visit very soon and I would love to hear about your wonderful stay in this historically charming Inn.
